Ice shanties on the Saginaw River in Bay City, Michigan

January 30, 2025

"The great thing about living in our region is the ability to enjoy the Saginaw Bay and its tributaries year-round. As an avid angler, there is nothing more exciting than the possibility of catching a trophy walleye or perch right out your back door. We are very fortunate to have such a world class fishery in the Bay Region. I hope everyone in the area gets the opportunity to spend time on the Saginaw Bay.”

When the temperatures drop and the Saginaw Bay freezes over, Bay City becomes a destination for ice fishing enthusiasts. The abundance of walleye, yellow perch, and northern pike make the Saginaw Bay a top fishing destination in the country.

Local fisherman and Essexville resident, Justin Grifka, reflects, “The great thing about living in our region is the ability to enjoy the Saginaw Bay and its tributaries year-round. As an avid angler, there is nothing more exciting than the possibility of catching a trophy walleye or perch right out your back door. We are very fortunate to have such a world class fishery in the Bay Region. I hope everyone in the area gets the opportunity to spend time on the Saginaw Bay.”

But Bay City isn’t just a great fishing spot—it’s thoughtfully designed for activity. The river walks, parks, and piers make the waterfront inviting to everyone, whether they’re casting a line or enjoying the view. These spaces reflect a commitment to community, creating an environment where people can come together and feel part of something bigger.

With the view of the USS EDSON, a retired United States Navy destroyer and iconic maritime museum, fishermen are reminded of how much history and community pride this area holds while embracing the winter charm of the Saginaw River.

Few communities can boast such a unique blend of history and recreation, and we’re proud to share it with locals and visitors alike.
